Close Reading

What is “close reading”?  Close reading is a deeper reading of any text.  The reader will read the text closely and analyze its content for a clearer understanding.  Teaching students how to read closely empowers them to become thoughtful and careful readers as well as independent learners, learning unknown words, questioning the author, and constantly showing their own thinking.

Close Reading is linked to the Common Core K-12 Anchor Standards

CCSS.ELA-Literacy. CCRA.R.1 Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.

3 Key Components of the Close Read

* Annotating (writing responses and comments on the text to show thinking)

* Summarizing

* Rereading
