Key Terms for Writing a Summary

Key terms to know when writing a summary:

Summary:  a brief statement or account of the main points of a passage or story to include a beginning, middle, and end (includes main idea and key details)

Sequence:  a set of related events that follow each other in a particular order

Plot:  the main events of a story (story line)

Setting:  the place or surroundings where an event or story takes place

Main idea:  the most important thing the paragraph or story tells about a topic

Character:  the mental, physical, and moral qualities (or traits) specific to an individual in a story/text

Major event:  an important event that takes place in a story/text
